Annihilationism by Benjamin B. Warfield

Here's a good article on the topic of Annihilationism by B.B. Warfield. Annihilationism, aside from being hard to type and not appearing in spellcheck application, is the teaching that Hell means destruction for a non-believer, not eternal, conscience torment. I was introduced to this idea a by a work called "Two Views of Hell" that my Dad used to own, and I've been strongly convinced that this viewpoint is consistent with scripture. I'm linking the Warfield article here, but I'd recommend the "Two Views of Hell" book, which is actually a theological dialog of both sides of the issue.

  1. I also lean towards that conclusion, but it is to fall prey to one of Satan's cleverly concealed traps to focus much attention upon such. For just being thrown into the Lake of Fire, come Judgment Day, is a fate that no one in their right-mind would want to suffer.

Nonetheless, even that is missing the point. For we were all created to spend all of eternity with our Heavenly Father in His Kingdom of Heaven as heirs to all that is His in glory, and it is upon the assurance of that reality that we should all be focused.

  2. Please forgive me if my previous comment sounded like a rebuke to you. Be assured that it was certainly not meant to be as such. In fact, it was actually designed to encourage further discussion.

  3. No apology needed - I certainly didn't read that as a rebuke. This is just one of those issues that I give some thought to, as the current of eternal hell torment basically makes the rebellious sinner immortal. I'm not sure I agree with that, or that it's consistent with scripture either.
